Benny the Ball is an anthropomorphic cat and a main character in the Top Cat animated television series. He is known for being Top Cat's best friend and right-hand man, and is the youngest member of his gang. His voice was originated by Maurice Gosfield.
Character description
Benny is a short, indigo-colored cat with a peach-colored coat covering his face. He wears a white sports jacket that fastens with only a single button at his neck. His eyes appear to be black dots, unlike the other cats who have white sclerae with black pupils.
Benny is a friendly and loyal companion who remains very close to Top Cat for the most part. However, he is prone to being simple-minded and sometimes shown to be a victim to his own child-like innocence. Although he is not the smartest member of T.C.'s gang, he is shown to be mature and brave at times, being able to help them out whenever he could. Benny is also capable of asking the most logical questions to T.C.'s schemes, and at times, he is shown to have a dry wit when it comes to providing comic relief.

Behind the scenes
- In the Spanish dub for Top Cat, Benny was given a child's voice, making him seem more like a naive child than a small adult. His name was also changed to Benito to reflect this, which in Spanish, adding "ito" or "ita" to a word makes it sound small and adorable (for example, "Gato" is a cat but "Gatito" is a kitten).
In popular culture
- The scene from "Naked Town," in which Top Cat, his gang, and Dibble are sitting on the curb outside the Ajax warehouse is being watched by Mike in the 1984 film Sixteen Candles.
- Chief Judge Ricky watches "The Violin Player," his favorite he has seen a dozen times, in the fourth issue of the Red Razors comic series, although only Top Cat is seen. He refers to it by saying, "It's that episode where Benny gets mistaken for a famous violin player."
- In "Episode Two" (series 2) of the Dead Ringers radio sketch program, Nick Russ presents Cartoon Crimewatch that reports on Top Cat victimizing the passerby that walked through Hoagy's Alley. Top Cat was using the stupid Brain (mistakenly called "Brains") to swindle money for a fake charity for stupid cats. He gets an old lady's watch, which he gives to Benny to fence, but he takes it literally. Officer Dibble comes onto the scene, but is distracted by a phone call from the sergeant who wants him back at the station, which disappoints Dibble because he would rather stay on TV, breaking the fourth wall.
