Augie Doggie is an anthropomorphic dog and one of the main title characters in the Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy animated television shorts, which came as part of The Quick Draw McGraw Show. He is a highly-spirited, yet rambunctious child, and in many of his misadventures, his main goal is to impress his father, Doggie Daddy, through ambitious means. His voice was originated by Daws Butler.
In the Jellystone! reboot, Augie is now an 11-year-old girl,[1] and when not dealing with her overprotective father, she hangs out with her two best friends, Yakky Doodle and Shag Rugg. Augie is voiced by Georgie Kidder in this version.
Character description
Augie Doggie is a young orange dog with a long snout and black ears, most likely that of a Dachshund breed. His main attire consists only of a green long-sleeved sweater.
The son of Doggie Daddy, he is an energetic, inquisitive youngster always motivated by ambition and to explore the world around him. He has a youthful enthusiasm towards many things, and his knack for asking the most innocent of all questions, or doing seemingly helpful tasks like inviting animals to their home, often puts Doggie Daddy on the spot. His imaginative ambitions would occasionally be strained by his father's sometimes strict advice, although these were usually pushed aside once Doggie Daddy accepts his requests unwittingly. He posseses some knowledge in science and has the ability to converse with other animals. Augie, who usually shows his love to Doggie Daddy, would often refer to him as "dear old Dad."

Development
When The Quick Draw McGraw Show was being developed, the concept of Augue Doggie & Doggie Daddy was concieved using traits from Spike & Tyke from the Tom and Jerry theatrical cartoons, including their father-son dynamic; they were made due in part to William Hanna and Joseph Barbera reusing ideas from their previous work at MGM.[4]
In a Variety magazine article on January 8, 1959, the father-son pair were originally named "Pete" and "Repete," but a change on their January 28 article stated that the series would be called "Arf and Arf." Eventually, Augie was settled for the son's name, which originated from the brother of writer Michael Maltese's mother, according to Maltese's niece Margaret.[4]

Behind the scenes
- Augie has similar personality traits with Sylvester Jr. from the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons, as both sons have a loyalty towards their respective fathers (in Junior's case, Sylvester) and would sometimes feel embarrassed by their behavior.
- Warren Foster, who wrote some episodes for Augie Doggie, also created Sylvester Jr. under Robert McKimson's animation unit at Warner Bros.[4]
- According to Hanna-Barbera's 1982 calendar, Augie was born on August 12th.
- Similarly, Daws Butler used Augie's youthful vocalization as a basis for the voice of Elroy Jetson, only less melodramatic in tonal inflection.
- Augie inspired Tyke's latent speech and personality in the TV series Tom & Jerry Kids.
- In the Spanish dub, Augie is renamed Canito
- For Jellystone!, Canito is renamed Canita.
In popular culture
- In the Partridge Family episode "I Left My Heart in Cincinnati," the Partridge Family visits King's Island, where a picture of Augie can be seen in the background at the end of the episode.
- In the Family Guy episode "Brothers & Sisters," Daddy asks for a second chance with Carol now that Augie is all grown up.
- In the Gui and Estopa episode "As Encomendas" ("Orders"), Augie and Daddy are seen waiting in line for the Scooby Snacks store.
