Meet Rajni

The Venture Bros., a Jonny Quest-esque parody TV series on Adult Swim, was supposed to be set in the same universe as Jonny Quest. By the time Hadji appeared, though, the creators of The Venture Bros. were prohibited due to legal issues, so when Hadji finally made his appearance as an adult in "The Doctor is Sin," he was renamed Rajni, and was an office worker for Jonas Venture, Jr.

Behind the scenes

  • Hadji's trademark incantation, "Sim sim salabim", is taken from "Simsalabim"; a magic phrase akin to "Abracadabra" that has been attributed to Danish-born magician Harry August Jansen.[3]
    • "Simsalabim" itself was taken by Jansen from a Danish children's song (Højt på en gren en krage) that he knew of, which in return has its roots in the medieval play A Gest of Robyn Hode.[3]
  • Hadji has been given two surnames so far:
    • In The Real Adventures TV series, his birth name was Hadji Singh.
    • In the Jellystone! TV series, he was called Hadji Quest through marriage to Jonny for some reason.

In popular culture

Main article: List of pop culture references to Jonny Quest
  • Jonny Quest is parodied in the Evil Con Carne episode "Max Courage!" In this twisted version, Hadji is substituted with Rick Courage, the biological older brother of Max (who resembles Jonny), whom Dr. Courage favors more than Rick, forgetting his name and preferring their pet weasel ride the boat to safety, and then gets blamed when they end up marooned on a tiny island big enough to allow the family to sit together on.
  • In The Fairly OddParents TV movie Channel Chasers, Timmy zaps himself into the world of Jonny Hunt, in which he becomes part of an escape with the titular, young Jonny Hunt and his team from a laser-firing robot shaped like a scorpion in the jungle. Hadji is represented by an unnamed Native American boy.
  • In the Family Guy DTV movie Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story (which was later edited for TV as "Stu & Stewie's Excellent Adventure"), Stewie talks to his older self about the job he once had as an airline check, where he accepts entry for Jonny and his father, but not for Hadji, who he retains for a security inspection because of his race. Hadji tries to get his way by saying "Sim sim sala bim," but Stewie is unfazed and tells him to cut back on saying that.
  • In the Drawn Together episode, "Spelling Applebee's," upon removing his turban and jacket, Foxxy's nemesis is revealed to be an adult version of Hadji, with a new Mister T-like haircut.
  • In the film The Incredibles 2, Dash watches the Jonny Quest episode "Arctic Splashdown," where Hadji and Jonny celebrate their team's victory.
  • In the Pop Culture Jeopardy! episode "Knockout Game 1," the question in the category of "It's Time for Cartoon!," the question for $1000 is, "Kids can fight villains and travel the world like cartoon boy Jonny, who had this last name," with the answer being, "Who is Quest," which contestant Anthony of Team Oops! We Guessed It Again got right. For this question, host Colin Jost announced the question over a photo of the series, instead of the question being written on a panel.

The Venture Bros.

Main article: The Venture Bros.
  • "Powerless in the Face of Death:" On one of Team Venture's adventures, Venture Sr. was saved by Hector Molina, a Mexican child, in the same way as Hadji saved Dr. Quest in "Calcutta Adventure." After this, Hector was adopted and became Rusty's best friend and fellow Boy Adventurer. In the 20 intervening years, Venture Sr. had hired Hector as an employee in the west manufacturing wing of the compound, and eventually forgotten. When Rusty came across him, he had no memory of their adventures together, and fired him.
  • "Orb:" Billy watches the cartoon which was based on the original adventures of Team Venture and made a pop icon of Rusty as a Boy Adventurer, which also starred his father, Hector, and an a large Asian bodyguard named Kano. The Rusty Venture cartoon has a Jonny Quest style intro, with mimicking scenes and typeface.
