Baba Looey, short for Baba Louis, is an anthropomorphic Mexican burro who stars as a main character in the Quick Draw McGraw animated television shorts. His voice was originated by Daws Butler using a Mexican accent.

Working both as a deputy sheriff and Quick Draw's trusty sidekick, often provides the solution to whatever mess Quick Draw gets into. He is clearly the more sensible of the two, and provides sarcastic quips to Quick Draw's intelligence (or lack thereof).

In the Max reboot series Jellystone!, Baba is a girl named Bobbie Louie, and is Cuban rather than Mexican. She is voiced by Jenny Lorenzo.

Character description

Baba Looey is often portrayed as a loyal and kind individual, although he can be quite exasperated with Quick Draw's stupidity at times. Baba Looey is also known for being more sensible than Quick Draw. At times realizing some detail about a given situation, Baba Looey tries desperately to caution Quick Draw of a trap or other danger, before Quick Draw charges headlong into the fray without listening or giving consideration to his words. Baba Looey is also not afraid of making snide remarks on Quick Draw's intelligence behind his back, but quickly takes them back when Quick Draw catches him.

He speaks with a thick Mexican accent, referring to partner Quick Draw as "Queek Straw," saying the word "Sí," and sometimes refers to people as "Senior" and "Seniora." He also spurts out Spanish words (albeit in gibberish sentences) whenever he gets mad or in shock.

Baba Looey is a short burro with a brown coat, a tan muzzle, long ears and grey hooves. He wears a sombrero and a yellow scarf.

In Jellystone!, known as Bobbie Louie, she wears a pair of glasses, a yellow business jacket and a lime green skirt.

A Web Premiere Toon

In the episode "The Pitch," Baba Looey pitches his idea to the producer for a cartoon about cavemen and dinosaurs called The Flintstones. It gets approved by the producer; Fred Flintstone himself.

Harvey Birdman

Baba Looey appears in the Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law episode "Guitar Control," where he hangs out with Peanut. He is later accidentally killed by Peanut, who wanted to mess with Quick Draw's guitars. In "Babysitter," he is seen at a morgue. In "Juror in Court," he and Quick Draw appear in a Kama Sutra book, performing the "Cowboy" position. In "Droopy Botox," he is back to life as a paperboy.

Wacky Reboot

He played the role of one of the "Low Lives" that Penelope Pitstop had to avoid.

Everyone's Back in Jellystone!

In Jellystone!, Bobbie Louie is the head of the town's Small Business Better Business Bureau of Small Business, and has plans to take over the world using her corporate tactics.

Bobbie buys an expired fish stick from Top Cat and his gang and is the first person to be turned into a fish.

Baba Sells Out

Quick Draw and Baba on Samurai Jack's train.

Baba Looey makes a cameo in the Samurai Jack episode "Couple on a Train." He informs Quick Draw that a fight is about to commence on the train. Quick Draw states that no one will be fighting on this train as long as the two of them were around. He is then shot in his hat, covering his eyes. He assumes that it's already time for bed due to how dark it is under his hat.

Team Up with Scooby-Doo

In Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #23, in the story "Go West, You Meddling Kids," Baba assists Quick Draw and Mystery Incorporated in defeating a hypnotized Ricochet Rabbit.

Based on a True Story

Baba Looey makes a background cameo in Exit Stage Left!: The Snagglepuss Chronicles. In the final issue, he's talking to someone on set of Quick Draw's animation studio.

Development

During the planning stages of The Quick Draw McGraw Show, Baba Looey's original name was going to be "Poco". It was changed to "Baba Looey" in reference to the Cuban song "Babalú". He was also said to be based on actor Dezi Arnaz, who at the time starred as Ricky Ricardo in the television sitcom I Love Lucy, and made the "Babalú" song a household name for his character.

During production on Jellystone!, Melody Iza, herself a transgender artist, suggested for Baba to be made into the transgender character of Bobbie mid production.

• Baba Looey is renamed Pepe Trueno in the Spanish dub for Quick Draw McGraw.
  • For Jellystone!, Bobbie Louie is renamed Pepa Trueno.
• Scooby-Doo! Team Up Issue 23 reveals that Baba Looey can cook and normally does so for Quick Draw, and that he went to deputy training with Droop-a-long Coyote.
• In an episode of The Quick Draw McGraw Show, Baba Looey reveals that he regularly shaves, just in case you couldn't tell that he is an adult.

In popular culture

• On a July 26, 1990 taping of The Howard Stern Show, Executive Producer Gary De'llAlbate mistakenly called Baba Looey "Baba Booey" when discussing how he wanted to purchase an animation cel of Quick Draw and Baba Looey. "Baba Booey" then became Gary's nickname on the show. Dell'Abate later explained that when he watched Quick Draw McGraw as a child, Quick Draw would often call Baba Looey "Baba Boy", usually in frantic moments ("Help me, Baba Boy!"). Quick Draw's drawn-out pronunciation of "boy" sounded more like "booey", which led Dell'Abate to think that the character's name was actually "Baba Booey".
  • Stern has since told his listeners to interrupt high profile political and media events by shouting his name and "Baba Booey," which Peter did in the Family Guy episode "Mr. Griffin Goes to Washington."
  • In the Drawn Together episode "Breakfast Food Killer," Baba Looey appears as Baba Booey who is waiting in line to become the next mascot of Quackers. He is seen jumping around and attacking people while yelling "Baba Booey."
  • A clip of De'llAlbete saying "Baba Booey" became an internet meme sometime around 2020.
• In the Daria Episode "Lane Miserables", Trent asks Daria why Quick Draw always hangs around with that "freaky little mule", referring to Baba Looey.
• In the South Park episode "Imaginationland Episode III," during the final battle between the good and bad sides of fictional characters, Baba can be seen on the good side alongside Quick Draw.
• In Japan, there is a burger restaurant named Baba Looey, with its mascot coincidentally being that of a donkey.
