The Powerpuff Girls is an American animated superhero-comedy television series produced by Cartoon Network Studios for their own Cartoon Network. It ran from 2016 to 2019, airing 119 episodes that spanned three seasons. It is the second Powerpuff Girls series after the first series to also be called The Powerpuff Girls.
It's essentially just the same as the original series, with more emphasis put on the comedy of the Powerpuff Girls, three little girls, who were accidentally created in a laboratory with extraordinary powers they use to protect Townsville from the supervillains who run amuck.
Production
Development
A reboot was announced by Cartoon Network on June 16, 2014, by Rob Sorcher and Pete Yonder, the Chief Content Officer and Vice President of Consumer Products for North America, Cartoon Network Enterprises, respectively.[1]
In a 2015 interview with Otakus & Geeks, original series voice actor E.G. Daily reported that she, along with her former castmates, Catherine Cavadini and Tara Strong, had recorded the pilot to a new series, but they were replaced when Bob Boyle and Nick Jennings took over, who scrapped that version in favor of their own.[2] According to Jennings, he and Boyle decided to recast the roles with younger actors to "infuse some new energy into [the series]."[3]
Boyle and Jennings wanted to "really dig a little deeper" with the girls' personalities and "figure out what makes them tick." They also changed the kindergarten to a K-12 school to explore looked at ways of updating the series to modernize the series so it could be more "sophisticated" and explore the different student cliques and school clubs that couldn't be done if they were still in kindergarten, even though they kept the girls the same age.[3] They used this as the same reasoning by reducing the old villains, and bringing in new villains who are "connected to what's going on in today's world." Although they fully invested in keeping Mojo Jojo as he was "perfectly designed" to be still be used in the new series.[3]
The reboot series was officially announced in Cartoon Network's Upfront State for 2015-2016, with Nick Jennings as executive producer.[4]
