Yo, Yogi!

Jellystone!

Cindy Bear is a talking anthropomorphic bear and Yogi Bear's love interest in the Yogi Bear animated franchise. Her voice was originated by Julie Bennett.

Character description

Cindy is usually characterized for being a Southern belle-type figure with a sweet personality and is Yogi's girlfriend. She is kind-hearted bear with a pronounced Southern accent, in addition to having a kindered sense of hospitality. Despite roaming freely within Jellystone Park in the instances where she's in there, she rarely engages in Yogi and Boo Boo's antics, and doesn't share the same antagonistic relationship towards Ranger Smith. Cindy's romance towards Yogi varies in a on-and-off relationship, with her persuing Yogi in some cases while he avoids her advances. However, just as often, Yogi is also shown to return her favors.

In Jellystone!, Cindy works as a doctor at Jellystone Hospital, alongside Yogi and Boo Boo. Unlike her classic counterpart, Cindy doesn't have a Southern accent and isn't madly in love with Yogi, but is characterized as vastly intelligent with the ability to create unique inventions.

Cindy is physically depicted as a tall bear with a slim build, light brown fur, and tan fur on her muzzle. She is normally seen wearing a light blue skirt, a yellow scarf, and a white flower on her head. She is also seen with an umbrella in some occasions.

In her appearances prior to the film Hey There, It's Yogi Bear, Cindy initially resembled more as a female version of Yogi, sporting a stocky body with blue fur, a light yellow hat with a red bow at the back, and a frilled neck collar with a circular necklace.

Development

Cindy Bear was originally designed by Ed Benedict. In one early sketch, she was clad in a bonnet, a frilly scarf and an apron with an elongated, pointed muzzle.[2] In a second sketch, she had a rounder facial appearance with her most accessories removed, save for the frill scarf.[3]

Cindy was later redesigned by Iwao Takamoto for her appearance in the film Hey There, It's Yogi Bear, out of suggestion from Joseph Barbera to make her look more cute. In the autobiography Iwao Takamoto: My life with a Thousand Characters, Takamoto expressed that he had instilled Cindy's design with "all the ursine sex appeal" he could.[4]

In popular culture

  • In the film Bye Bye Birdie, Kim owns a Knickerbocker Toy Co. doll of the blue furred Cindy in her room.
  • In "Episode Seven" (series 2) of the BBC Radio 4 radio sketch program Dead Ringers, Yogi and his nephew (yes, nephew) Boo Boo are guests on The Jerry Springer Show, as Yogi wants to confess that he has been having an affair with Ranger Smith (and I thought the nephew relation was bad enough). Boo Boo doesn't like this and is concerned for Yogi's girlfriend, Cindy. But Yogi feels powerless against Ranger Smith's "picnic basket," and calls Cindy a "trailer trash hoe." Boo Boo can't hear anymore and responds with, "Talk to the paw, cos the face ain't listening!" As Yogi and Boo Boo bicker, Jerry closes the show with his "Final Thoughts," that if you go into the woods be careful because you'll be in for a big surprise.
