This encyclopedia is about the American animation studio [[Hanna-Barbera]], founded by producers and directors, [[William Hanna]] and [[Joseph Barbera]]. Not only from when it started in 1957, but also about the duo's work at MGM from 1940-1957, which are now recognized as a property of Hanna-Barbera. It also covers the spin-offs that other studios have done in their stead, such as [[Warner Bros. Animation]], as well as [[Ruby-Spears]], a studio formed by [[Joe Ruby]] and [[Ken Spears]], writers for Hanna-Barbera, who left to start their own studio, but still have close ties to Hanna-Barbera, especially since many of the shows they produced ended up being recognized as Hanna-Barbera works when they were released onto DVD.
