Muttley is a talking anthropomorphic dog and the secondary antagonist of the Wacky Races animated franchise. His voice was originated by Don Messick.

In his debut series, Muttley is the sidekick of Dick Dastardly, the driver of the Mean Machine (designated #00), and a villainous cheater who competes in the Wacky Races. The duo's usual strategy is to succeed by setting all kinds of traps for the other racers to trip on; but most of them end up backfiring and leave the two at a constant disadvantage. Muttley is most recognizable for his wheezing laugh, which usually happens at the expense of Dastardly's failings.

Behind the scenes

  • In the Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines episode "Sappy Birthday," his birthday is revealed to be on April 16.

In popular culture

  • In "My Husband Next Door," an episode of the British sitcom George & Mildred, George is on holiday time at home and wants to spend it watching TV instead of helping Mildred plan on redecorating the lounge, which starts off with watching Wacky Races, but Mildred says he can do without Dastardly and Muttley for once.
  • In The Simpsons episode "Children of a Lesser Clod," Comic Book Guy is shown wearing a Muttley T-shirt to a basketball match at the YMCA.
  • BBC Two's Dead Ringers TV series has an episode (yes, "an episode," #lostmedia) that merges Top Gear with Wacky Races. Jeremy Clarkson, the host of Top Gear, is now Dick Dastardly riding in the Mean Machine chasing Penelope to over her car and be the pretty one. With the help of his babe magnet and Muttley also appearing as a traffic guard to stop her.
  • In the Teen Titans episode "Crash," Gizmo mumbles, "Razzle frazzle Titans," after Robin accidentally shoots him into Cyborg's butt instead of his brain where he should've been sent to remove a computer virus. It happens again at the end of the episode, when both Gizmo and the virus exit Cyborg's body, with Gizmo still in his shrunken state, leaving him to be chased by the virus.
  • In the Family Guy episode "April in Quahog," Peter isn't having a good time at jury duty, making a joke about the vending machines being out of order, too, which makes Brian snicker like Muttley, while also wearing an aviator cap and scarf, as Muttley did in Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines.
  • In the Japanese manga Super Mario 4 Koma Manga Theater, Dastardly and Muttley are seen in the background of a panel.

Dead Ringers (radio)

  • "Episode 4" (series 2): There is a sketch called Police Crash Bang Wallop (also a parody of Police Camera Action!), presented by Alistair Stewart, in which Lazy Luke and Blubber, Professor Pat Pending, and Dick and Muttley are described as a bunch of boy racers who are flagrantly disregarding the rules of the road. They are said to be repentant, although Dick says, "Drat and double drat," followed by Muttley's snicker and laugh.
  • "Episode Three" (series 5): In response to Elton John singing a non-Disney song, Phil Collins also sings a non-Disney song set to the tune of "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)," about Dick losing against the Ant Hill Mob, the Mean Machine being cut in half, and punching Muttley in the nose when Muttley laughs at him. In typical fashion, we then hear Dick ask for Muttley's help, who just laughs.

  • "Handicar:" Dastardly and Muttley are reported by CNN to be making a comeback in the new Wacky Races, which uses photos of their regular younger selves, but in the present, they have both grown old. During the race, they naturally attempt to cheat by cutting down trees to block the other racers. It doesn't work and their car ends up being hijacked by Nathan and Mimsy.
  • "South ParQ Vaccination Special:" The duo of Dastardly and Muttley celebrate the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
