Buttercup Utonium, better known mononymously as just Buttercup, is a child superhero and one of the three titular characters in the Powerpuff Girls animated franchise. Her voice was originated by E.G. Daily.

She is a member of the Powerpuff Girls, which also includes her other fraternal triplet sisters, Blossom and Bubbles. Together, they live with their father, Professor Utonium, in the city of Townsville, which they have become the official protectors of.

Utonium created the girls—albeit accidentally—while trying to create the perfect little girl with a mixture of "sugar, spice, and everything nice." He then accidentally added the extra ingredient of Chemical X, which created three little girls around the age of five-years old; complete with special powers such as being able to fly, super strength, and shooting lasers from their eyes.

Character description

Buttercup is a young girl sporting a lime green dress with a black-centered stripe, along with white stockings and black Mary Janes. To signify her tomboyish, rough nature, she has short black hair in a flip.

In the original series, she is portrayed as a 5-year old girl who attends Pokey Oaks Kindergarten, whilst fighting crime alongside her sisters Blossom and Bubbles.

The Toughest Fighter

Buttercup, along with Blossom and Bubbles, was created in Professor Utonium's laboratory basement, when he wanted to artificially create the perfect little girl to be his daughter by mixing up a bowl of sugar, spice, and everything nice, but accidentally added the mysterious black vial of Chemical X. In reality, the accident was not the Professor's fault, but the result of his trouble-making lab assistant monkey, Jojo. The Chemical X caused an explosive chain reaction and out came not one but three little girls, each with their own superpowers. Jojo, meanwhile, had also been affected by the blast, causing his brain to expand above his head, along with increased intelligence which allowed him the power of speech. Even though Mojo had caused the accident, he grew resentful of the immediate love the Professor showed the girls, leaving the Utonium residence behind to begin a path of supervillainy. Both Professor Utonium and the girls blocked it from their memories soon after.[1][2]

Buttercup Sells Out

In The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy episode "The Grim Adventures of KND," when the Kids Next Door arrives, Billy exclaims, "Hey! You're not the Powerpuff Girls!" Later in the episode, Buttercup and her sisters are some of the characters who exploded out of the Delightful Reaper.

In the Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa crossover episode "Say Uncle," Buttercup is one of the names on Uncle Grandpa's list.

In the OK KO Let's be Heroes special "Crossover Nexus", she's one of the Cartoon Network characters Ben 10 transforms into.
