"Mr. Mojo's Rising" is the second part of episode seven of The Powerpuff Girls season one, and the fourteenth episode overall. It aired on January 6, 1999 on Cartoon Network. It was written by Rob Renzetti, and directed by Genndy Tartakovsky and series creator, Craig McCracken, as well as being voice directed by Tartakovsky.

Memorable quotes

Narrator: The city of Townsville... Cannot be seen from the windowless laboratory of the Powerpuff Girls' suburban home. Nevertheless, it is in this dim den where the brightest of births took place--The creation of the Powerpuff Girls. Every afternoon, Professor Utonium returns to this subterranean lab to continue his noodling with nature. Oh, here he comes now.


Bubbles: Hey, could this be a clue?
Mojo: Dear Powerpuff Girls, I have kidnapped Professor Utonium! I have taken him someplace against his will! If you look for him in the spots he likes to be, you will not find him! He's with me, but not by choice! I took him and he didn't like it! This message is from and was written by, Mojo Jojo.
Bubbles: Who could have done this?


Narrator: Oh, Mojo Jojo, what are you up to this time?
Professor Utonium: Oh, Mojo Jojo, what are you up to this time?


Narrator: Oh, no. Has this sibling rivalry come to an end? Has Mojo Jojo finally defeated the Powerpuff Girls?
Mojo: Yes! I have defeated the Powerpuff Girls!


Narrator: Wow! Talk about ironic. Professor creates Mojo, Mojo creates girls. It's crazy, I tell you. ha ha! Yeah. So once again, the day is saved, thanks to the Powerpuff Girls. But...Thanks originally to Mojo Jojo.
Mojo: It was me. It was me. It was me. It was me. It was me.

Behind the scenes

  • The episode title is a reference to the "Mister Mojo risin'," an anagram of Jim Morrison's name which was used as a line his band The Door's 1971 song "L.A. Women."
  • Buttercup says "What you talkin' about, Mojo" in the same way Arnold would "What you talkin' about, Willis" in the 1980s sitcom Diff'rent Strokes.
  • The Powerpuff Girls Movie later slightly retcons by downplaying this revelation since the Powerpuff Girls had already met Mojo who was still calling himself Jojo, as it was not long after the girls' creations. For the movie and the episode to work, the girls would have to have blocked the movie out of their memories, just like the Professor blocked his memory of owning Jojo in this episode.

Errors

  • At the end of the episode, the narrator says that Utonium created Mojo when all he did was adopt him, with Mojo causing his own creation in becoming Mojo Jojo.

Everlasting influence

  • The second time Mojo helps in the creation of the Powerpuff Girls is in "Get Back Jojo."
