DC Comics, also known simply as DC, is an American comic book publisher owned by DC Entertainment, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. It was first founded in 1935 as National Allied Publications. The company's name is an initialism for "Detective Comics", which originated as comic series in 1937. It is one of the largest and oldest American comic book companies, with the first comic published under the DC banner in 1937.[1]
The majority of its publications are largely set in the DC Universe and features various iconic heroic characters, such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman; as well as famous teams, including the Justice League, the Teen Titans, and the Suicide Squad. The universe also contains multiple iconic villains, including Lex Luthor, the Joker, Black Manta, the Cheetah, Brainiac, and Darkseid. Outside of their mainline universe, DC also publishes other unrelated titles, including The Sandman, V for Vendetta, and The Watchman, under the alternative imprints Vertigo and DC Black Label.
From 1974 to 1985, DC collaborated with Hanna-Barbera Productions in producing a series of animated television series based on their Justice League title, which came as part of the Super Friends franchise. While earlier installments fall under a lighthearted, educational tone (as opposed to their mainline comics, and due to television censorship at the time), the later entries—which began with Challenge of the Superfriends—would gradually develop a more serious tone with the introduction of actual supervillains and character drama.
Due to Warner Bros. owning DC Entertainment, several Hanna-Barbera cartoons were adapted into comics under the DC branding. A few notable examples include Scooby-Doo and its follow-up Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?; the anthology series Cartoon Network Presents; and titles published under the Hanna-Barbera Beyond/Hanna-Barbera Universe initiative, which re-imagined several shows into tales that explore mature topics.
