Detailed summary

Memorable quotes

Velma: Okay, the map says the sightings are this way.
Shaggy: I've got a weird feeling. Like, these woods don't look like our regular woods. They look different!
Velma: What are you talking about?
Shaggy: Like, I don't know! Things just look more... realistic!
Scooby: Reah! Realistic!

Shaggy: Zoinks! We're never gonna get out of here!
Velma: "Zoinks?" That's all you have to say, "Zoinks?" What the heck does that mean anyway?
Shaggy: Oh, I'm sorry. Yeah, what do you want me to say, "Jinkies?"
Daphne and Fred: Ha ha ha ha.
Velma: Fred? Daphne? What are you laughing at?
Fred: He's got a point, Velma.
Velma: "Jinkies" is a word! Stop laughing!
Shaggy: Jinkies! I think we're royally zoinked! Is that better?
Daphne and Fred: Ha ha ha ha ha.
Velma: Stop laughing!

Filming

Filming took place between July and September, 1999 in Georgia cities of Atlanta, Alpharetta, Smyrna, and Elijay. But when it came time for the live-action scenes to be filmed, the Warner Bros. had the marketing van in Toronto, Canada, so it was decided that it was cheaper for the directors to be flown over there, opposed to having the van sent to Atlanta.

A lot of the night shots were filmed by Larry Morris.

The house at the end was one that Morris lived in at one point.

Post-production

The night footage was graded with a flashlight effect and 16mm black and white scratch effects at Turner Studios.

Music

Release

Dates are in order of release:

  • United States: October 31, 1999 on Cartoon Network

Behind the scenes

  • The special is a parody of the "found footage" style of filming which made the film The Blair Witch Project a success that same year.
  • Casper County, where the gang investigates, is named after Casper Kelly.
  • The gang makes pokes fun at Shaggy for having the real name Norville, which was given to him in the A Pup Named Scooby-Doo episode "The Sludge Monster from the Earth's Core."
  • Shaggy says "Zoinks" once.
  • Velma says "Jinkies" once.
  • Scooby's full name Scoobert, was given to him in the A Pup Named Scooby-Doo episode "Curse of the Collar."

Everlasting influence

  • The unedited version where the monster is revealed to reveal was referenced during a talk between Fred and Moltar in the "halftime" of Cartoon Network's Road Runner vs. Coyote: The Big Game XXVIII marathon, where Fred revealed that it was another fake monster.
