Release

Dates are in order of release:

  • United States: March 20, 2018 at PaleyFest; March 29, 2018 on The CW

Behind the scenes

  • Peter New who played Jay, previously played one of Daphne's tattooed fans in the live-action film Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.
  • The opening sequence featuring Colonel Sanders' mansion is a homage to the haunted mansion featured in the opening sequence of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! Even Supernatural's own series title card now says Scoobynatural, making it the purest of crossovers.
  • Since the second season of Supernatural in 2007, there have been several references to Scooby-Doo, which pay off in this episode; in particular, Dean has remarked about Daphne in "Playthings," and enjoyed watching Scooby-Doo in "Regarding Dean."
  • The cause of Colonel Sanders's death wasn't originally mentioned, but in this new version, we find out it was cancer, which Fred (and presumably by extension the rest of the gang) apparently already knew, but didn't say because Scooby-Doo is for kids, and kids have never had to deal with cancer in their lives.
  • Dean compares the attacking stuffed dinosaur to the preschool character Barney.
  • Dean tells Sam to "Be like Elsa -- let it go," in reference to the character's song "Let It Go" in the 2013 movie Frozen.
  • Daphne says "Jeepers" twice.
  • Velma says "Jinkies" three times.
  • Shaggy says "Zoinks" once.
  • Scooby says "Ruh-roh" once.
  • Sam compares Scooby to Marmaduke, which was actually a legal concern of Hanna-Barbera when originally creating the character in 1969.
  • Dean refers to the last time he and Sam were sucked into a TV, which happened in "Changing Channels."
  • Shaggy jumped out of a biplane in the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode "What a Night for a Knight."
  • In his existential crisis, Fred mentions how he could've been searching for Dracula, which he and the gang did face (albeit Big Bob Oakley in disguise) in the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode "A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts."
  • In Dean's pep talk, he refers back to the cases in the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episodes "Which Witch is Which?," "What a Night for a Knight," "Spooky Space Kook," "Bedlam in the Big Top," "Mine Your Business," and The Scooby-Doo Show episodes "The Creepy Case of Old Iron Face" and "Mamba Wamba and the Voodoo Hoodoo."
  • On the ownership papers, Alan's surname is revealed to begin with a "W."
  • Jay is arrested by the Crystal Cove Police Department, which reveals that the pawn shop is set in Crystal Cove, where Mystery Incorporated live in the TV series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.
  • The last scene with Dean wearing an ascot, has background cameos of the writers, Jim Krieg and Jeremy Adams.

Errors

  • The presentation of "A Night of Fright is No Delight" doesn't match perfectly to the way it played out originally, and that's even without taking into consideration the *ahem* supernatural effect it had on the gang as time went on. For example, the Colonel's mansion was out at sea in the original episode, with the gang traveling by boat in the opening, whereas in this version, the gang can access it by the Mystery Machine as it is now on the mainland.
  • Dean has two separate ethics in that one side of him says that the gang is pure, innocent, and good, and their fabric of reality mustn't be tarnished, while the other side of him oogles Daphne, flirts with her, and ultimately, well, wants to take Daphne's virginity. Tell me this wasn't his agenda.
  • Who knows how Scrappy got in that doorway gag?
  • In Dean's pep talk, he mentions the Old Iron Face and Mamba Wamba cases, which technically hadn't happened at that point.

Everlasting influence

  • Dean said "Jinkies" in the next episode, "The Thing."
  • The one-off gig eventually led Jeremy Adams to join the Supernatural staff as a story editor and writer a couple of years later in its hundred and fiftieth fifteenth and last season.

Marketing and promotion

A week before the episode aired, Hot Topic released a line of t-shirts inspired by the crossover.[1]
