Wacky Races

The Gruesome Twosome, consisting of Big and Little Gruesome, are main characters in the Wacky Races animated franchise. They are a pair of monsters who race in the Creepy Coupe (designated #2); a horror-themed car consisting of a small bell tower housing a fire-breathing dragon, bats and other creatures. Their voices were originated by Daws Butler and Don Messick respectively.

Character description

The duo is comprised of two monsters; Big Gruesome, a lurching, huge humanoid monster akin to Frankenstein's monster; and Little Gruesome, a short purple-skinned person who resembles a vampire. Big's clothing mainly consists a red, long-sleeved sweater, while Little wears a white coat over his suit and bow tie. Despite their macabre nature, they are actually among the most likely to help out the other racers out of trouble.

Behind the scenes

  • Apart from taking inspiration from Frankenstein's monster, Little Gruesome's voice was patterned after Boris Karloff, who famously played the monster in Universal's 1931 film adaptation of Frankenstein.
  • Little Gruesome's voice was taken from Peter Lorre, who notably appeared in classic Hollywood films such as Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon.
