History

Past life

The team was initially formed when Reed Richards decided on making a test flight into space with an experimental rocket of his own design. Ben Grimm, Reed's old friend from their college years, was convinced to pilot the ship after joining him, his girlfriend Susan Storm and her younger brother Johnny. Once in space, their ship was flooded by a wave of cosmic radiation, forcing Ben to activate its automatic re-entry back to Earth.[1]

Following the crash landing, the team emerged from the ship's ruins and suddenly discover that they have been mutated with new abilities. Reed gained the ability to stretch his body and limbs at will, Sue was able to become invisible, and Johnny was able to fly and engulf himself on fire. Ben gained superhuman strength and durability, but more tragically, he was transformed with a tough orange, rock-like exterior. All four decided to use their powers for the betterment of humanity and christened themselves the Fantastic Four, in addition to giving themselves their superhero aliases: Mister Fantastic (Reed), the Human Torch (Johnny), the Invisible Girl (Sue) and the Thing (Ben).[1]
