Samurai Jack is an American sci-fi action-adventure dystopian television series created by Genndy Tartakovsky, and originally produced by Cartoon Network Studios for Cartoon Network for its first four seasons, then the more mature fifth and final season was produced by Williams Street for Cartoon Network's late-night programming block, Adult Swim. As a Cartoon Network original series, it began on August 10, 2001 and ended on September 25, 2004, while Adult Swim's revival began on March 11, 2017 and ended that same year on May 20. 62 episodes were made in total, with 52 for Cartoon Network, and ten for Adult Swim, in a sense, making it Cartoon Network's longest running show.
The series revolves around an unnamed prince from feudal Japan, who is on a quest to become a warrior. When his homeland is attacked by the evil supernatural being Aku, his attempts to save his people are for naught, when Aku opens a time portal before the final blow, sending him into the distant future, where Aku reigns unchallenged, and the world has crumbled. "Jack," the warrior's adopted name from the youths of tomorrow, goes on a long perilous journey to find a way back to his own time and/or defeat Aku in the broken world Aku has created in the future.
Tartakovsky, having created Dexter's Laboratory through Hanna-Barbera, which also aired on Cartoon Network, has thrown in several Easter eggs to Hanna-Barbera throughout the series.
In 2014, IDW Publishing published a crossover limited six-issue series Super Secret Crisis War!, which featured Jack and Aku teaming up with other good and bad classic Cartoon Network characters, respectively.
