Character description

Biography

As the Waynes left the movie theater, a thunderstorm began, with Thomas choosing for them to take a shortcut through an alley, where they were met by Joe, who wanted Martha's handbag. Thomas got in the way and a struggle occurred until Joe fatally shot both Thomas and Martha, leaving Bruce an orphan.

As an adult, the Scarecrow discovered this fear in Batman, bringing Joe Chill to live through hallucinations, which Batman ultimately overcame and brought the Scarecrow to justice.

Behind the scenes

  • While Joe wasn't named on-screen, he was addressed by name in the storyboard.
  • The deaths of Batman's parents in "The Fear" was the first time their deaths had been depicted outside of what DC Comics had published. Of course, you didn't actually see the gun or the sound of them getting shot, as the camera moved away from that scene in silence, but given how Super Friends began, it's a major growth in how the series began with its squeaky clean image.
