Azrael serves as Gargamel's loyal companion and is often tasked by his master to capture the Smurfs. However, Azrael is typically wiser than Gargamel and often points out the flaws in his plans. He is also mischievous in nature and tends to get in the wizard's way, resulting in being treated cruelly by him, which is why he has turned Gargamel several times.

Behind the scenes
- Azrael's first comic appearance was in the story "Le Voleur de schtroumpf" ("The Smurfnapper" in English), created by Peyo and published by Dupuis in 1959.
- By coincidence, Azrael is to Gargamel like what Muttley is to Dick Dastardly, as both duos were voiced by the same voice actors (Don Messick and Paul Winchell).
