"Tricks and Treats" is the first episode of Hokey Wolf season one, and came as a segment of The Huckleberry Hound Show. It aired on March 16, 1961 in first run syndication. It was written by Warren Foster, and produced and directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the founders of Hanna-Barbera.

Hokey and Ding-a-Ling set up Farmer Smith to gain free food handouts. Hokey then summons the press to ensure his success.

Detailed summary

Hokey and Ding-a-Ling are walking down a dirt road when Ding-a-Ling tells Hokey that he's hungry and Hokey tells him that with their "Do-it-Yourself survival kit, they'd dine substantially". Ding-a-Ling asks Hokey how it works and Hokey tells Ding-a-Ling that he'd be happy to demonstrate it, but first, they would have to find a likely farmhouse. Just then they come across Farmer Smith's farmhouse and set up the survival kit, which consists of a newspaper, a trap and a camera to set up an unsuspected Farmer Smith into thinking he would get sued for animal cruelty on "be kind to animals week" because of the injury on Hokey's leg. Smith takes Hokey into the house to talk it over.

Smith presents Hokey with hot barley water and returns to his plowing, Hokey upset that he wasn't getting any actual food, goes to "rad the icebox". Ding-a-Ling becomes worried that Smith will catch them, so Hokey guarantees their protection by phoning the Humane Society and arranging for someone to come over to do a story about the situation. Meanwhile, Smith becomes worried about how Hokey's doing, so he decides to check up on Hokey by looking through the window, only to see that Hokey faked his leg injury. He then goes to get his gun and prepares to shoot Hokey, but Hokey plugs his finger in the barrel, which backfires when Smith's shot blows Hokey's eardrums out. Smith then chases Hokey to tear him apart with his bare hands, when the Humane Society people just happen to arrive to do the story on Smith; Hokey suggests that they take a few pictures of Farmer Smith feeding his friend and him.

The Humane Society people take pictures of Smith feeding Hokey, and Ding-a-Ling tells the viewers that "Hokey's the greatest wolf ever".

Memorable quotes

Hokey: This isn't exactly a charm bracelet on my leg you know and I'm taking you to court, for setting this trap to catch some innocent wildlife creatures.

Hokey: That's murder to the eardrums!
