The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, also known simply as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a country located in Northwestern Europe. It comprises of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The country has the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland, and most of the smaller islands within the British Isles. Its capital is London, England.
It is both a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy; the hereditary monarch serves as head of state while the Prime Minister serves as the elected head of government. As of 2022, it has a population of roughly 67 million people. The country's influence can be observed in the legal and political systems of its many former colonies, including the United States and Canada. British culture remains globally prominent, particularly its influence in language, literature, music and sport.
