Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, known professionally as Tom Cruise, is an American actor and producer. In 1990, the Hollywood icon and infamous Scientologist was astonishingly the voice on Captain Planet of Captain Planet and the Planeteers for the first six episodes, but his contract didn't kick in unless he did a seventh episode.[1] He was replaced with David Coburn, who believed Cruise was let go for taking the role as a "macho superhero".[2]
When Captain Planet was first announced, Cruise personally called DIC Entertainment's talent department for the role.[3] He was already a household name back then having starred in the 1986 film Top Gun. Since the 1990s, he has immortalized himself as the near ageless Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible film series.
Behind the scenes
- "A Hero for Earth" with Cruise as Captain Planet is on the official Captain Planet Facebook page.[4]
- While Cruise was Captain Planet, his then second wife, Nicole Kidman, was the voice of Gaia. Presumably, she was let go for the same reasons.
