"The Snorkasaurus Hunter" is the eighteenth episode of The Flintstones season one. It aired on January 27, 1961 on ABC. It was written by Warren Foster and Michael Maltese, and produced and directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the creators of the series and the founders of Hanna-Barbera Productions.

While vacationing in the mountains, Fred & Barney spot and try to capture a wild Snorkasaurus, who's anything but stupid.

Development

Despite already appearing for two episodes as a regular pet, Dino is given a formal introduction of sorts in this episode, albiet one which didn't fit with his characterization. He is depicted as having a full range of vocabulary and talks in the same mannerisms as comedian and actor, Phil Silvers. From his next appearance onward, he reverts back to being a speechless pet and the "Phil Silvers Dino" is never referred back to.

  • In this episode, the company Fred works for is identified as Rockhead & Quarry Cave Construction Co.
  • Mrs. Stonehead and Junior are not that different from Mrs. Roxy and Junior in "The Engagement Ring".

Errors

  • As mentioned above, the episode is infamous for giving Dino a backstory, despite already appearing earlier on "No Help Wanted". Not only did he speak in that appearance, but he also ended up more as Wilma's pet rather than being Fred's.
    • If this episode was supposed to be how Dino became the Flintstones' family pet, then there would be no explanation as to why he lost his human-like intelligence and ability to speak.
    • This episode is further convoluted by Dino's appearances in The Flintstone Kids, which retconned him as Fred's pet since childhood.
