Talk:Captain Planet and the Planeteers (TV series)
I'm constantly mixed on whether or not the DiC and Hanna-Barbera versions are the same or separate. But in trying to find out the history of the change, I was able to find this very surprising reveal that Tom Cruise was the original voice of Captain Planet before he was replaced. I thought Wikipedia was fooling us all those years ago. The joke's on them now, because they've removed it since then, but it was true all along. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/captain-planet-original-voice-wants-939451/ -- Signed by James (talk) 20:36, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- Tom Cruise voiced him? I wasn't aware of that. Wikipedia tents to make stuff up so it's hard to find accurate information. Jokes on them for sure, lol. Don't know whether or not the HB and DiC versions are connected. -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 20:42, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- On DVD, it's all one series (seasons 1-6), while on Amazon, they actually have the seasons of Hanna-Barbera listed as 1-3. -- Signed by James (talk) 20:44, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
Well, after deciding that New Adventures is a sequel, I had decided to contact two of the creators on Facebook, which was about a month ago. Today, I got a reply from Barbara Pyle who said that it's a continuation. So... I guess it will be one page. -- Signed by James (talk) 08:04, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- I guess, should we do the same with the 80s Jetsons? Maybe treat that as connected to the 60s version? I mean, we're already doing that with Blast-Off Buzzard with the 90's shorts being a continuation from the 70s shorts. -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 08:42, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Jetsons is so problematic. It seems like more work keeping them separate than keeping them together, but doing either feels unnatural. But you got to give Hanna-Barbera their props for when they reaired season 1 to make sure they looked consistent with the "new version" with the title cards (even though Orbitty wasn't in season 1). Should we use this opportunity to reevaluate 80s Jonny Quest? This was brought back along with Jetsons, only Jonny Quest was given a new intro, but still called Jonny Quest (Boomerang, at least, attempted to rectify this by calling it New Adventures, which may be where the title comes from, but I'm not sure). I did ask Lance Falk once, who said that it should be considered separate from the 60s version, but then he's not a fan of the 80s series. -- Signed by James (talk) 09:20, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- In short, I think 60s and 80s Jetsons should be merged. -- Signed by James (talk) 09:24, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- I mean, if they have the same title and little differences, then I guess it could be a continuation, but I'm not entirely sure. If they both fit in at best with their 60's versions, then yeah, they can can be on the same page. But yeah, 80s Jetsons seems to somewhat be a continuation to me. -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 09:27, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Since every old and new episode of Jonny Quest and Jetsons were brought together in the Funtastic block this may have been done to boost the block itself, because both series were cut relatively short in the 60s. I think my biggest problem is the 20 year gap in their revivals. But then apparently the new Roseanne episodes were also considered a continuation and that had a 20 year gap as well. (Using Roseanne as a comparison. Oh, boy.) -- Signed by James (talk) 09:37, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Of course I would consider all of the originals and revivals as being connected in their own individual universes. Not like a reboot or anything. I just meant from a production point of view, if things had been reset. That's what I wanted to know with Captain Planet, Jetsons, and Jonny Quest. Blast-Off Buzzard is notable too for being a continuation, it's just placed in a strange place because it's a segment in a Tom and Jerry prequel that isn't faithfully set in the 20s or 30s. So, are those two 90s shorts something you wanted to put in the episode list of the original series page or you were just talking about how you personally viewed the 90s shorts as continuations? -- Signed by James (talk) 10:53, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think they fit there on the segments page. The only real difference I see in the T&JKS shorts is that the two now have the ability to talk. So yes, I would count it as a continuation to the 70s shorts. -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 10:57, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
Reassessment
I was rethinking how to handle the DIC stuff since The Adventures of Gumball is coming back for a seventh season under the Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe banner, which would mean if we handled Gumball the same way, we should theoretically cover the past six seasons that Cartoon Network Europe made, but I see no need for that. I feel like we could pick up Gumball in its seventh season, whereas Captain Planet might benefit more if its entire six seasons were covered. Also, the majority of the merchandise of Captain Planet (i.e. toys, video games, and comic books) seems more based on the DIC version than the HB version. I'm not sure if any merchandise was made for the HB version. Also, the OK KO crossover seems ambiguous as to which incarnation it's referencing, since those crossovers haven't always been CN shows, as Sonic the Hedgehog has never been a Cartoon Network character.
I feel okay with covering DIC's Captain Planet, it's just that Gumball being revived as a HB cartoon made me question it. -- Signed by James (talk) 10:27, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
- I'm alright with that. -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 15:23, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
Season 6
The internet isn't really altogether on the order of season 6. I forgot that I was going in the order of the DVD when making these episode pages, so I got worried and started to rearrange the title cards based on the Wikipedia order. Some of the other sites go by the DVD order, but I don't know if season 6 is going by air date or production order. The season 1 DVDs went by production order when it came on DVD in the US (by Shout Factory), and the Australian DVDs (by Madman) just copied that, but afterwards when Madman continued it by themselves, they just seemed to go by airdate order, so I'm not really sure on the order here. I don't want to be wrong, but I don't know what to do. -- Signed by James (talk) 16:09, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I'm not sure what we should go by either. -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 16:31, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
Complete Franchise Set
WB put the entire series out on DVD a few days ago, which has 15 discs which is different to Madman's 18-disc set. I was making it so that, DVDs that were the same, despite being given different titles in different countries, they should still be on the same page, but with this different Captain Planet set that WB has put out, I can't see this working out the same. -- Signed by James (talk) 11:08, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not entirely sure. -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 18:34, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
