Behind the scenes
- MacFarlane was a huge fan of Hanna-Barbera shows growing up. This is evident by the sheer amount of references to the shows in his own work.
- Larry and Steve, his first project for Hanna-Barbera, was a sequel to his independent short The Life of Larry, and in many ways are precursors to Family Guy. The title characters were the basis of Peter Griffin and his dog, Brian, respectively.
- MacFarlane and Van Partible had co-written the second season bible of Johnny Bravo, when he departed Hanna-Barbera to Fox to develop Family Guy, and Partible had been fired by Cartoon Network.
- In 2009, MacFarlane created the Family Guy-styled cutaway gags "Fred and Barney Try to Get Into a Club" and "Fred Flintstone Takes a Shit" for his series Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy. In the former, he was the voices of Barney and the Great Gazoo.
- In 2011, MacFarlane was announced to be at the helm of a The Flintstones reboot for FOX. He would've also been the voice of Barney Rubble. However, the project was never realized.
