"Hard Luck Duck" is the eighth episode of What a Cartoon! season one. It aired on April 16, 1995 on Cartoon Network. It was written and directed by its creator and co-founder of Hanna-Barbera, William Hanna. It was an unsuccessful backdoor pilot to a fully realized Hard Luck Duck spin-off series.

Harley lets Hard Luck get his own breakfast, which leads the precocious duck to wander into a duck-hungry fox's cafe.

Release

Dates are in order of release:

  • United States: April 16, 1995 at 7 pm on Cartoon Network[1]

Behind the scenes

  • The short is heavily inspired by the Yakky Doodle shorts that were packaged with The Yogi Bear Show in the 1960s, which were directed by William Hanna and his partner, Joseph Barbera, with Hard Luck Duck being a parody of Yakky himself, Harley Gator being a parody of Chopper, and the fox being a parody of Fibber Fox.
  • Russi Taylor is not unfamiliar with playing young, talking ducks, as she voiced triplets Huey, Dewey, Louie, and their friend Webby, in Disney Channel's DuckTales.

Errors

  • When the fox is first seen holding Rare Recipes, it is blue-green in color, but when he has it on the table, it is briefly baby blue.
