Goober and the Ghost Chasers is an American animated mystery comedy television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions (H-B) for ABC's Saturday morning children's programming. It ran in 1973, airing a total of 16 episodes that spanned one season.

The entire series has also been released on DVD. The series has also been released on various VHSes in the late 1980s.

Production

Development

In order to compete against CBS's Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, ABC wanted Hanna-Barbera to make a similar series, which resulted in the creation of Goober and the Ghost Chasers, as well as other clones, such as The Funky Phantom, Speed Buggy and Jabberjaw, all of which, also premiering on ABC.

The Partridge Kids, who were popular during the 1970s, also had regular guest appearances, which was likely done to grab more viewer interest.

The series however, was unsuccessful, and was cancelled after only sixteen episodes.

Music

The music was composed by Hoyt Curtin.

Legacy

The Ghost Chasers later appear in the Jellystone! episode, "Frankenhooky," in which the series is poked fun at by how people see it as being "boring and unoriginal." In this appearance, Ted, Tina and Gilly are voiced by Dana Snyder, Jenny Lorenzo and C.H. Greenblatt, respectively, while Goober isn't voiced.

In popular culture

  • In The Baby-Sitters Club episode "Kristy and the Great Campaign," Courtney chooses a Goober and the Ghost Chasers VHS to rent for her and the other kids.
