Chicken is an anthropomorphic chicken and one of the main characters of the Cow and Chicken animated television series. He is the older brother of Cow and a son of two human parents, known simply as Mom and Dad. He is voiced by Charlie Adler.

Character description

Chicken acts as a grumpy, cynical, and sarcastic individual who tends to act mean towards his younger sister Cow, and even the rest of his family. He is also driven by his large ego and often tries to put himself above his sister, and even manipulate her in a lot of his schemes. In spite of this, he also puts his negative traits aside to take care of Cow when she appears to be in moral danger. Between Cow and Chicken, the latter is proven to be the smarter of the two, as he sometimes tries to educate her on occasion. He is also shown to be very skillful on various things, though not to the extent of his little sister. Chicken is often the target of the Red Guy, who tries to scam both him and Cow.

Chicken's speech is riddled with malapropisms and has a highly sarcastic sense of humor, which he often uses out of Cow's expense. Despite being a male, he is demonstrated to have the ability to lay eggs, not unlike a female hen. Like other chickens, he cannot fly, but is also very much afraid of flying.

Development

Creator David Feiss brought the series to life after creating a bedtime story for his then-six-year-old daughter. The morning after, he remembered it and turned it into a 25-page children's book. When Hanna-Barbera called him for their 52-episode What a Cartoon! idea, he pitched them Cow and Chicken. The title characters started off as life-long friends with a romantic interest, but they were changed to siblings.[2]

A hundred people auditioned for the different parts, with Charlie Adler auditioning separately for Cow and Chicken. There was a "little pushback" from Cartoon Network who believed that each character should be played by a different actor, but Feiss reminded them of Mel Blanc.[2]
