He is a highly competent wizard expertise in magic and alchemy. He owns many spell books in his castle that he can use, but his preferred method is using his other skills; namely inventing machines. He is also seen planting traps for the Smurfs to fall into. Despite this, Gargamel is easily thwarted by the Smurfs' workforce and their various allies, and much of his schemes didn't fare any better in the long run.

* Gargamel's first comic appearance was in a ''Smurfs'' story titled "Le Voleur de schtroumpf" (or "The Smurfnapper" in English), created by [[Peyo]] and published by Dupuis in [[1959]].
