Behind the scenes

  • The episode title and the game within the episode are an allusion to the roleplaying board game Dungeons & Dragons, which had been turned into a cartoon the year this episode aired; the first episode of Dungeons & Dragons premiered the same day on CBS.
  • The Mystery Machine is absent.
  • Shaggy and Scooby pass through a sign that says "Rhird revel rot of ruck," but Scooby reads it without his speech impediment ("Third level lots of luck"). Shaggy questions Scooby on what he just said, to which he replies "Ri ron't row, Raggy!"
