The Amazing World of Gumball, also known as Gumball, is a British-American animated sitcom television series created by Ben Bocquelet. It was produced by Cartoon Network Studios Europe for Cartoon Network. It ran from 2011 to 2019, airing 240 episodes that spanned six seasons, and is currently on hiatus while new episodes are being produced under the studio's rebranded name Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe.

In the town of Elmore, anything can happen, and at the center of this is 12-year-old cat boy Gumball Watterson, and his eccentric, but loving family, as he uses his wits, cunning, and incurable optimism to get through the day's absurd and hectic challenges.

Production

Development

Ben Bocquelet was hired to help people pitch their projects at Cartoon Network Studios Europe, when it was formed in London in 2007. When the studio decided to have the staff pitch their ideas to Cartoon Network,[1] Bocquelet had the idea of using some rejected characters he had created for commercials and put it together in a series inside of a school setting.[2] The pilot, which centered around the premise of its varied cast, caught the attention of Daniel Lennard, then-vice president of Original Series and Development at Turner Broadcasting System Europe, who was impressed and approved production of the series in 2009.[3]

In 2019, The Amazing World of Gumball had seemingly ended, but would continue with The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie! and Gumball: The Series, which were greenlit on September 21, 2021 by HBO Max and Cartoon Network.[4] Bocquelet described the movie as creating a "whole new universe."[5] In August 2022, HBO Max dropped the movie, although it is still in production with hopes of being picked up elsewhere.

The Amazing World of Gumball was also officially announced to be back in production during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2024, with the crew working on the seventh season opener, "The Burger" for the 2025-2026 season. A screening of the partially made episode was viewed for guests at Annecy, with a gift bag shaped like a Joyful Burger burger box.
