Maybe they could talk at this time and just didn't say a peep with the exception of Tom's (actually Joe Barbera's) scream and other noises they made (such as laughing) in the theatrical shorts (which most of what came after that included them followed their voices being absent). -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 19:45, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

They could speak alright. Tom spoke quite a bit. But when the world thinks of Tom and Jerry, they're gonna think of their silences first, which was who the studio was reaching out to. It's just funny to point it out they've never spoken before, and then make a long list of all the times they had spoken to each other or on their own in the shorts. -- MisterJames (talk) 20:13, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
It's funny when you think about the fact that they live in a universe full of talking animals, yet they barely speak themselves. -- Snoopy The Dog (talk) 21:59, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
