Starquest: Challenge of the GoBots is a film treatment for the Challenge of the GoBots TV series, and would have been produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and the Tonka Corporation. The script was written by Jeff Segal and is dated July 29, 1985, although Segal's name is not credited. Starquest was rejected in favour of GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords, which was also written by Segal.

In the movie, the Last Engineer discovers the center of the universe, which contains a huge power he dubs the Starforge, which can simultaneously end the war with the Renegades and rebuild GoBotron.

Starquest added to the mythos surrounding the Guardians and the Renegades' war, trying to resolve it, had bigger roles for the humans as they had in the TV series, and redeemed Dr. Braxis, who turns himself in to the authorities, while Battle of the Rock Lords dropped all of that in favour of making a bigger deal out of the new Rock Lord characters, giving them big celebrity voices, and presenting it as an entirely new mythos that is separate from the ongoing war.
