Behind the scenes
- Writer of the episode and creator of the character, Joan Ford, intended for Shaley to be a transgender girl,[1] although the series was cancelled before those plans could be fully realized.[2] Ford would've preferred a trans actor to be the voice of Shaley, but the budget wouldn't allow for an additional guest.[3] Ford also got to be involved with the design of Shaley, and was pleased with the final look, which she felt was a little bit relatable particularly with Shaley's bang over one of her eyes.[4]

I think she's the first LGTBQ character to appear in a Flintstones show. (There have already been some in the comics).". Twitter. Retrieved March 15, 2021.
