James Gilmore Backus was an American actor.

Backus died on July 4, 1989 from complications of pneumonia after suffering from Parkinson's disease for many years at the age of 76.

  • Backus was the voice of Quincy Magoo in the Mr. Magoo theatrical short cartoons, and in the TV series The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo (1964) and What's New, Mr. Magoo? (1977).
  • On Gilligan's Island, Backus played Thurston Howell III. He reprised the role in Filmation's animated series The New Adventures of Gilligan and Gilligan's Planet.
  • On Uncle Croc's Block, Backus provided the opening narration for the M-U-S-H segments.
