Robert Osbourne "Bob" Denver was an American comedic actor. He was best known for playing the foolish Gilligan, the title character, in the CBS sitcom Gilligan's Island, which aired from 1964 to 1967. Previous to that, Denver had played Maynard G. Krebs, the hippy sidekick/best friend of Dobie Gillis in The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis, another CBS sitcom, which aired from 1959 to 1963. Denver's portrayal of Maynard was used as the template for Shaggy Rogers in Hanna-Barbera's animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! in 1969.

Denver was interviewed for the Space Ghost Coast to Coast episode "Spanish Translation." During the interview, he wore Gilligan's hat. A clip is reused in "CHiPs," and he is mentioned in "Lovesick."

Denver died from pneumonia following throat cancer surgery on September 2, 2005, at the age of 70.
