Zach Tristopher "Gumball" Watterson is the eldest son of Richard and Nicole Watterson, and the protagonist and titular character of The Amazing World of Gumball animated television series. His voice was originated by Logan Grove.

He lives with his family in the American city of Elmore.

Character description

Gumball is a 12-year-old who starts off as quite innocent, humble, and optimistic, with little to no narcissism, which lessens as the series progresses, with Gumball becoming more conceited, jaded, and cynical, although always tries to remain optimistic as he used to be. He tries to have the best intentions in helping others, although usually this is more about benefitting his own ego, as he quite literally thinks the world revolves around him, such as when he wanted to give Clare Cooper a happy ending where she didn't have to leave Elmore.

What Gumball lacks in academic prowess, he makes up for in pure imagination, although this can sometimes warp his reality into believing what he imagines to be true. Gumball avoids studying at school by focusing on his home life instead or getting into some altercation with another student or teacher. He could be considered street smart, but that would be a compliment.

Whatever his world view may be, he has a soft spot for his next-door neighbor Mr. Robinson, who he never sees the bad in or at least accepts it as part of his personality. Mr. Robinson hates everyone and everything, including Gumball and his younger brother, Darwin, not returning no affection or appreciation in their endeavors to be kind to him, although in his defense, they end up causing a lot more grief and pain to Mr. Robinson than how he began with.

Gumball could also be quite gullible to crooks.

Unlike Gumball, Darwin remains the same, therefore, it falls upon Darwin to keep Gumball's ego in check.

• In the Teen Titans Go! episode "Squash & Stretch," Cyborg teaches the other members of the Teen Titans how violence is only funny when it is cartoon violence, symbolized through showing them a parody of Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoon, where Darwin and Gumball have taken the places Road Runner and Wile E., respectively.
