Top Cat is an animated franchise centered around a group of anthropomorphic alley cats, led by Top Cat, who live by roaming the streets of Manhattan, and regularly scam the citizens, with the foil to their schemes being Officer Dibble. It is based on the 1961 prime-time animated Top Cat television series.

While the series wasn't successful when it first premiered, it's grown attraction during reruns on Saturday Mornings back in its heydays. Its success during those reruns would later garner it with movies, comics, merchandising etc.

Origins of Top Cat

The earliest sketch of Top Cat drawn by Joseph Barbera (circa 1961).

The idea of Top Cat started out as a drawing Joseph Barbera made of a smart aleck cat with the words "Top Cat" underneath.
