Texas is a state in the Southern region of the United States, and the most populous state of the region. It borders Louisiana to the east, Arkansas to the northeast, Oklahoma to the north, New Mexico to the west, and an international border to several Mexican states (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas) at the south. The state also has a coastline on the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast. It has a total area of 268,820 square miles (696,241 km²). Some of its notable cities include Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Dallas, El Paso, and Austin, its capital city.
Known as the Lone State for its former status as an independent republic, the state is widely recognized for its large cities, tourist attractions such as the Alamo, cowboy culture and southern hospitality. It became the 28th state in the United States in 1845.
