- The title of the first story is a play on the title of Betty Smith's 1943 novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
- Uncle Purloin resembles Cosgood Creeps from the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode "A Night of Fright Is No Delight."
- Uncle Purloin's kids resemble Helga and Roger Stevens from the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episodes "Nowhere to Hyde" and "Don't Fool With a Phantom," respectively.
