Italy (Italian: Italia), also known as the Italian Republic (Repubblica Italiana), is a country located in Southern and Western Europe. Its peninsula extends into the Mediterranean Sea, with the Alps on its northern land border, in addition to islands such as Sicily and Sardinia. It has a population of 58.94 million people and its capital is Rome.
As a cultural superpower, Italy plays a major part in various institutes, economy and art, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the world. It is also a member of several international institutions, including NATO, the G7 and G20, the Latin Union and the Union for the Mediterranean.
