Pierre Culliford, known under the pen name Peyo, was a Belgian comic artist and writer known for creating The Smurfs and Johan and Peewit comic book series; the latter of which the Smurfs first appeared[1] in the 1958 story La Flûte à six trous ("The Flute with Six Holes").[Note 1][2]

He also worked at Hanna-Barbera as a story supervisor for The Smurfs television series.

Peyo passed away on December 25, 1992 from a heart attack, at the age of 64.
