Yabba-Dabba Dinosaurs is an American animated prehistoric comedy television series created by Mark Marek and Marly Halpern Graser. It was produced by Warner Bros. Animation for HBO Max. It ran from 2021 to 2022, airing 26 episodes that spanned one season (although HBO Max will tell you it spanned two). It is the sixth Flintstones series after The Flintstones. There is a Hanna-Barbera logo at the end, despite the fact it's still a defunct studio.
Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm, along with pet, Dino, venture into the unexplored Crags outside of Bedrock, where new dinosaurs are waiting to be discovered and potentially harassed by the scientifically curious Pebbles and meat-headed Bamm-Bamm.
This is the second series after Cave Kids to star Pebbles, Bamm-Bamm, and Dino, although, unlike that series, the parents are included, who now barely read like their original counterparts, so, pros and cons.
It's also notable for cameos by the Great Gazoo from The Flintstones, Moonrock Crater from The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, and Captain Caveman, who's only called Caveman (or Oomf) at this point.
Production
Development
In early 2016, character designer Chris Battle was one of the artists tasked with creating a new series called Yabba-Dabba Dinosaurs!, about a much younger Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm, which came close to being made into a pilot, before being put on hold.[1]
On May 23, 2018, the series was announced to be debuted in 2019 on Boomerang's online subscription service, with Mark Marek and Marly Halpern-Graser producing.[2]
Marek aged them up to around 8 to 10, because he felt that age group had yet to be fleshed out yet.[3] making it inadvertently appear to be random (just like ABC's Sports Night).
On August 13, 2018, it was announced that the series would be outsourced to Dublin-based animation studio Salty Dog Pictures.[4]
The canned laugh track has made a comeback but is employed only in the scenes set in Bedrock, as a nod to the original series,[3]
Aftermath
In 2018, Boomerang previewed the series with "The Grass is Always Dinner" in a newsletter for subscribers, which was subsequently leaked, receiving negative reactions from the animation community of fans, causing Boomerang to silently drop it. It did, however, air in Europe during 2020, and eventually, after a year-long delay in Canada, the first few episodes aired on Teletoon during the fall of 2020, until all their attention moved onto the Animaniacs revival for not only first-run showings, but also repeated viewings.
Series co-creator Halpern-Graser confirmed the series had been cancelled by the end of that year.[5][6] All the storyboard artists were laid off that month, which was abrupt according to Joe Apel, as the series was expected to last at least two seasons.[7] Will Terrell, an artist on Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, another Warner Bros. Animation-produced series, also announced that his series, Wacky Races, and Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs had been canceled.[8][9]
Joan Ford, writer of "Dawn of the Disposals," which introduced Shaley, was a male to female transgender cave kid, but the cancelation of the series prevented that revelation from occurring.[10]
Two other Caveman/Oomf episodes had been written, where he would travel to Bedrock, and then join a circus gaining the moniker of Captain Caveman.[11]
On August 19, 2021, it was announced that HBO Max would host it as one of their originals for September 30.[12] The second half of the season, promoted as season 2, was made available on February 17, 2022. In the latter half of August 2022, it was removed from HBO Max in a massive purge of original content from the newly-promoted President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav.

The theme song was written and performed by Mark Marek. The score was composed by Alessandro Tabora.

One of the unproduced episodes was called "The Bedrock Beast," possibly about Captain Caveman.[13]
