This encyclopedia is about the American animation studio Hanna-Barbera, founded by producers and directors, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Not only from when it started in 1957, but also about the duo's work at MGM when they directed the highly acclaimed Tom and Jerry theatrical shorts from 1940-1957, which are now recognized as a property of Hanna-Barbera. It also covers the spin-offs that other studios have done in their stead, such as Warner Bros. Animation, as well as Ruby-Spears, a studio formed by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, writers for Hanna-Barbera, who left to start their own studio, but still have close ties to Hanna-Barbera. Many of the shows they produced ended up being recognized as Hanna-Barbera works when they were released onto DVD.
