This encyclopedia is about the American animation studio [[Hanna-Barbera]], founded by producers and directors, [[Joseph Barbera]] and [[Will Hanna]]. Not only from when it started in 1957, but about the duo's work before then at MGM when they directed the prolific ''Tom and Jerry'' theatrical shorts, which are now recognized as a property of Hanna-Barbera. It also covers the spin-offs that other studios have done in their stead, such as [[Warner Bros. Animation]], as well as [[Ruby-Spears]], a studio formed by [[Joe Ruby]] and [[Ken Spears]], writers for Hanna-Barbera, who left to start their own studio, but still have close ties to Hanna-Barbera.
