"Fire Ant" is the seventh episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast season six, and the seventy-fifth overall. It aired on December 10, 1999 on Cartoon Network. It was written by Dave Willis, Matt Maiellaro, Jim Fortier, and Mark Banker.

Conan O'Brien points out what a lousy talk show host Space Ghost is, who gets distracted and consequentially fails to end the interview properly because of an ant.

Detailed summary

Memorable quotes

Space Ghost: Hoona Igna Chowa Neha! Hoona Igna Chowa Neha! Hoona Igna Chowa Neha?
Moss Man: Hoona Igna Chowa Neha! Hoona Igna Chowa Neha! Hoona Igna Chowa Neha!
Space Ghost Hoona Igna Chowa Neha! Hoona Igna Chowa Neha! Come on, Zorak! Igna Chowa Neha!

Conan: Well, Space Ghost, at the end of an interview, it's traditional for the talk show host to say, "Thanks for being here, Conan. This was Conan O'Brien. Check out his show on NBC at 12:35." You didn't do that. You completely blew me off. For all these people know, my show is a cop show on, uh, Fox or something, thanks to you.
Space Ghost: Isn't it?
Conan O'Brien: Where you going?
Space Ghost: The sand.

Development

In the table read of the episode, Conan was written as believing Space Ghost was named as such because he had died, with a cutaway joke revealing that Space Ghost had in deed died due to sticking an electric shaver into the aquarium of his pet fish, Dr. Fishopolis, to give it a shave. Then Conan just says he died eating a muffin.

Release

Dates are in order of release:

  • United States: December 10, 1999 on Cartoon Network

Behind the scenes

  • Conan mentions The WB, NBC, Fox, and his own talk show at the time, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.
  • Space Ghost mentions Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny from Looney Tunes.
  • Footage of the Dino Boy in the Lost Valley episode, "Marooned," is used for the cutaway gag of Space Ghost dancing to the Moss Man's chanting. The title character of Dino Boy also makes a cameo in this sequence.
  • Special thanks are given to Jay Edwards.
  • The original cut, which lasts for 22 minutes, involves a scene where Space Ghost slowly trails behind the second ant back to his home. A shorter cut, which lasts for 11 minutes and appeared in reruns, simply cuts this long sequence with a time card saying "The Next Day".
    • Another difference in the full version is when Space Ghost leaves Conan, the latter asks Moltar and Zorak if they want to do something with him, but neither of them responds to his question. This was absent in the short version.
    • One of the locations Space Ghost passes by is Sealab, the underwater research base from the Sealab 2020 animated series (and its parody spin-off, Sealab 2021).
    • The extended version of this episode was released in its entirety on DVD, and also aired on Adult Swim's 2023 April Fools broadcast.
