The Super Friends, also spelled Superfriends, is a team of superheroes who defend planet Earth from domestic and alien threats, and appear in the Super Friends animated franchise.

Development

The series was named Super Friends due to the then-ongoing Vietnam War, since "Justice League of America" would be deemed culturally offensive and patriotic-sounding to foreign countries; although, the team within the series is still referred to as the Justice League and JLA.

In popular culture

• In the Moesha episode "Age Ain't Nothin' But a Number," Hakeem comes through the Mitchell kitchen and greets them by saying, "Good evening, Superfriends." The scene is part of a clip show in "Girls' Night In."
• In the film The Incredibles 2, Evelyn mentions the "superhero friends" about not being there to save her parents, who her father preferred over calling the law.
• In the film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Justice calls Jay "old friend," as she's lost romantic interest in him, but Jay who hasn't, says he's a "super friend who wants to get back inside the Hall of Justice, yeah."
• In the DTV film Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse, the Justice League make their DC Super Hero Girls debut. The laidback Aquaman said that he suggested they call themselves the Super Friends, but was vetoed. When Aqualad latter appears he also thinks Super Friends would've made a better name.

Arrowverse

While not having an official name, the superheroes from each series have both collectively referred to each other and been referred to as the Super Friends.

• In the Batwoman episode "Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Two," Lex Luthor refers to the superheroes as "Super Friends."
• In the Legends of Tomorrow episode "Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Five," the Flash has a table made for a small group of the superheroes he was aided by during the Crisis. While they are chatting, they hear noises from Gleek who has escaped his cage.

Supergirl

In the sixth season of Supergirl, Supergirl's team is called the Super Friends.

• "In Plain Sight:" Supergirl told Lena she had become an official Super Friend.
• "Back from the Future - Part One:" Both the Martian Manhunter and Winn referred to their group as "Super Friends."
• "It's a Super Life:" Mr. Mxyzptlk referred to Alex and J'onn as Kara's "Super Friends."
• "Alex in Wonderland:" While Alex pretends to be Supergirl, a billboard says that Supergirl is the "#1 Super Friend," and Bonnie calls Supergirl/Alex's friends the "Super Friends."
• "Welcome Back, Kara!:" When William talks about Supergirl and her friends, Andrea gets the idea of calling them "Super Friends."
• "Dream Weaver:" "Super Friends" has become official as Andrea refers to them as such and even writes on a whiteboard "Superfriends."
• "Still I Rise:" The name continues to be used in an apparent official capacity by Supergirl in a vegetable PSA with Brainiac 5.
• "Blindspots:" Catco announced the Super Friends were in danger.
• "The Gauntlet:" Andrea chastises William for not covering the Super Friends. When he gets out of his slump, he decides to imbed himself into the Super Friends.
• "Magical Thinking:" The Super Friends officially embed William, but one of the ground rules is that he can't know their identities. Andrea is disappointed that William isn't using his job to get behind the scenes information on the Super Friends, and when he does (and his way), he refers to them as the Super Friends in his story about their fight against Nxly's magic. Also, Dreamer says how the Super Friends can turn the tide against Nxly.
• "Hope for Tomorrow:" Nxly sees William's article on the Super Friends. Kara also writes an article on the hope Super Friends are providing for the city.
• "A Nightmare in National City:" Kara mentions how the Super Friends stopped a threat against rival nations Kaznia and Corto Maltese. Later, the Super Friends face opposition when they cut off half the city after raising a dome around the nuclear plant to stop it from being attacked by a dream monster.
• "I Believe in a Thing Called Love:" Lex wants to get the Love Totem before the Super Friends do, so he can prove his love to Nxly. A second time he also calls them the "super idiots."
• "Truth or Consequences:" William informs Lex there will always be someone like him and the Super Friends to stop him.
• "Kara:" Reunited at Alex and Kelly's wedding reception, Kara says to Jimmy and Winn how they were the O.G. Super Friends.

Smallville

• "Prey:" John Jones (Martian Manhunter) refers to the superheroes led by Green Arrow as the "Super Friends."
• "Absolute Power (Part 1):" Oliver refers to his group as the super friends, while Chloe says they need some standardized trouble alert.
• "Warrior:" Zatanna told Clark "us Super Friends have to watch out for each other."
